ITINERARY:
We begin with the pick-up of passengers from the hotel or meeting point near the historic center, on our tour, we will visit:
Santa Catalina Monastery:
Built in 1579 and approx. 20 thousand square meters, it is considered a citadel within this city. Walking through its narrow streets with Spanish names reminds us of the architecture that comes from the south of Spain. Among its enclosures there is the cemetery, the beautiful gardens and cloisters. Masses are still held there since part of the enclosure still houses novices in the cloister.
Plaza de Armas and Cathedral:
Located in the Historic Center of Arequipa, around it is the cathedral of Arequipa in the north, the portals of Arequipa. An important place where the beautiful town of Arequipa was founded.
The Cloisters and the Company of Jesus:
This church was built between 1595 and 1698. It has a main nave, two side wings, a high choir and a sanctuary. Inside the temple you can see carved wooden altarpieces covered with gold leaf. In the sacristy is the chapel of San Ignacio, with polychrome murals that show tropical flora and fauna. The cloisters were built in the 18th century.
The San Ignacio Chapel:
Also called the Sistine Chapel of Arequipa, it is a beautiful example of Arequipa's decorative art, where the colors of its walls and dome stand out, whose vividness and intensity are evident throughout the centuries. One of the characteristics that stands out the most are precisely the four evangelists on the four pendentives and with their respective symbols: John with the eagle; Luke with the bull; Mark with the lion and Matthew with the man, which encourage us to learn about and explore religion and, more than that, the spirituality that is captured in these beautiful decorations made more than 300 years ago.
The Tristan del Pozo Mansion:
Today, this mansion built in the mid-18th century has become the headquarters of a bank and houses a site museum as well as an art gallery. This construction shows the splendor of Arequipa's colonial construction, having used ashlar stone as a material. It has vaulted ceilings and the typical colonial courtyards built by the Spanish.
San Francisco Complex:
The San Francisco temple is located in front of a small plaza. The church has a rectangular floor plan, three naves, a transept and a presbytery. This convent was founded in 1552, but its construction did not take place until a few years later. This complex, like the others, has suffered earthquakes, and the major modifications are in the original structures. The superb choir of the church, carved in ashlar, is admired by all. The sculptures are among the most beautiful works of the 17th century in Arequipa. The Third Order temple is located in the same plaza, and was built after the earthquake of 1784.
