Sillar Route
Aslar is the main material within the architecture of the White City and is found in the district of Cerro Colorado, here you can observe the process of extraction, carving and megacarving of the sillar.
The Sillar Route is currently managed by the Sillar Cutters Network of Arequipa, and comprises a length of 2000 meters, covering the exploitation of Añashuayco, cutters and the unexploited area of Culebrillas.
QUARRIES OF AÑASHUAYCO, located in the district of Cerro Colorado, are worked by 500 stone cutters, including men up to 80 years old and young people who inherit the family tradition, people who day after day with their sledgehammer and chisel and supported by a rope, extract the sillar.
Now the quarries where this white material is extracted have also been converted into a tourist circuit where the natural landscape and living culture are shown.
Arequipa is known as the White City, white because of the mansions, monuments and temples built with ashlar, which led UNESCO to declare this beautiful city as a World Cultural Heritage Site in 2000.
In the Cortadores ravine, the façade of the church of La Compañía de Jesús is shown. The process for the elaboration of ashlar is explained, as well as the beginning of the cutting of ignimbrite, also known as white volcanic stone, with the explanation of each step by a master stonemason.
